In this talk\, experts in the field will discuss the impact on security\, environmental policy\, and transatlantic relations 🇪🇺 🇺🇸 \nThe speakers of this lecture:\nMaria Strömvik is Deputy Director of the Centre for European Studies at Lund University\, specializing in EU foreign policy and decision-making. She has worked at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and led a government inquiry on Sweden’s EU engagement. \nAnders Ahnlid\, Director General at the Swedish National Board of Trade\, former ambassador to the EU and OECD\, has deep expertise in trade policy and Sweden’s economic diplomacy. He recently led efforts on frozen Russian assets for Ukraine. \nLars Danielsson\, a seasoned diplomat\, has represented Sweden in the U.S.\, China\, and the EU. Are you interested in understanding how their history and actions have shaped Lebanon and the broader Middle East region? 🌍 \nThis lecture will examine Hezbollah’s history and its impact on Lebanon and the region 🇱🇧 Dr. Rola El-Husseini will analyze five key moments\, including the 2000 Israeli withdrawal\, the 2006 War\, Hezbollah’s domestic conflicts and its role in Syria\, and its evolving regional strategy following Hamas’ Al Aqsa Flood Operation in 2023. \nDr. Rola El-Husseini is an Associate Professor at Lund University’s Centre for Middle Eastern Studies. A specialist in Lebanese politics\, Shi‘ism\, and Hezbollah\, she has held positions at Yale University and CUNY. Her research explores power-sharing\, Syrian influence in Lebanon\, and Arab women’s political representation after the 2011 Arab uprisings.

DESCRIPTION:📖 Since 1971\, Hafez al-Assad and later his son\, Bashar al-Assad\, have held a tight grip on power in Syria. The 2011 uprising\, which began as peaceful protests\, quickly escalated into a devastating civil war\, drawing in global and regional actors. After decades of Assad family rule marked by authoritarian governance\, the fallout of Assad has marked what’s next for Syria? \nJoin us for this lecture exploring the possible political transitions\, security challenges\, and the role of international actors. Drawing on years of research\, Aron Lund provides insights into Syria’s uncertain future and the forces shaping its post-Assad trajectory. \nAron Lund is a Middle East analyst at the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI)\, specializing in Arab world politics and security. A fellow at Century International and St Andrews University\, he has worked with Carnegie\, SIPRI\, and the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation\, focusing on Syrian armed groups and regional conflicts.
