UPF LECTURE // Qais Fares // Silence & Conspiracy – Syrian media & the refugee crisis
In recent weeks there has been a considerable increase in media coverage on the refugee crisis and also a shift in how it is portrayed. The horrific images of a young boy washed ashore sparked outrage and debate in European media outlets. But how are these events being portrayed in Syrian media?
Qais Fares is an independent Syrian journalist and MA Human Ecology student who fled Syria after getting arrested in February 2011 in Damascus for trying to cover the first pro-democracy protests in Syria. He now lives and operates in Sweden with a special focus on Syrian media outlets. He will give a lecture sharing his observations of how the pro-assad media outlets reported on these events, including how they went from silently ignoring them to spreading conspiracy theories about the EU.
